Graduate Cloud Support Engineer at IFS

IFS — Industrial and Financial Systems — runs its global research and development operations out of Colombo, making it one of the most significant technology employers in Sri Lanka and one of the few that offers genuine global career exposure without requiring emigration. The company builds enterprise resource planning software used by manufacturers, aerospace companies, and defence contractors across 60+ countries. When IFS engineers in Colombo solve a problem, the fix ships to clients in Germany, the United States, and Australia.

In 2026, IFS has publicly committed to hiring 1,500 cloud specialists to support its shift to cloud-native ERP delivery — one of the largest graduate technology hiring targets announced by a single employer in Sri Lanka this year. Graduate Cloud Support Engineer roles sit at the entry point of this hiring wave.

The role involves supporting IFS's cloud infrastructure for enterprise clients: monitoring cloud environments, troubleshooting deployment issues, handling client escalations on cloud configuration, and working alongside senior engineers on infrastructure improvement projects. Day-to-day, it is hands-on cloud operations work — not theoretical. You are working on live enterprise systems used by real clients.

What IFS wants at the graduate level is specific. AWS Cloud Practitioner certification is the recognised entry credential — it demonstrates baseline cloud literacy in the terminology and architecture IFS works within. Azure Fundamentals is an acceptable alternative. Beyond cloud certification, IFS values structured problem-solving (the ability to diagnose a system issue methodically, not just intuitively), clear written communication in English for client-facing documentation, and a demonstrated interest in enterprise technology — not just consumer apps.

Why is this a strong opportunity for a 2026 graduate? Three reasons. First, IFS offers a genuine global career path without leaving Sri Lanka — senior engineers at IFS Colombo work directly with international clients and peers in Stockholm, London, and Chicago. Second, cloud support is a skill-compounding role: the technical knowledge you build in year one translates to cloud architecture, DevOps, and platform engineering within three to four years. Third, IFS is a stable, growing employer in a sector (enterprise software) that is structurally expanding, not contracting.

To make yourself competitive: sit the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam before applying — it takes four to six weeks of focused study and costs approximately $100 USD. Build one small cloud project on the AWS free tier (a static website deployed on S3, a Lambda function, a basic EC2 setup) that you can discuss in an interview. Practice explaining what you built and why in clear, non-jargon English. That combination — certification, project, communication — is what IFS's graduate hiring panel is looking for.
