Cyber Safety and Data Protection at Work

Spot the scams aimed at Sri Lankan students and workers — bank texts, fake job offers with registration fees, phishing emails, OTP takeovers and APK files — by practising on a real-looking phone. Then lock down your accounts, handle customer data the way the Personal Data Protection Act expects, and know exactly what to do and who to call if something goes wrong.

What you will learn

Foundations

  1. Why Scammers Target YouNot because you are careless. Because you are busy, hopeful and online, which is exactly what scams are built for.
  2. Fake Job Offers and Registration FeesThe scam aimed squarely at job seekers: easy money, a friendly recruiter, and a small fee first.
  3. Phishing Emails at WorkThe email that looks like it came from IT, HR or a supplier, and the two-second check that catches it.
  4. Real or Scam? Telling Them ApartNot every message is a scam. The skill is telling the difference, quickly and calmly.

Getting comfortable

  1. Passwords That Hold UpThree random words beat one clever word. And the same password twice is the real danger.
  2. Two-Step Login: Your Second LockEven if someone steals your password, a second step keeps them out. Ten minutes to switch it on.
  3. Your OTP Is Yours AloneThe six-digit code is the key to your account. The scam is getting you to read it out.
  4. Updates, Apps and APK FilesThe update you keep postponing, and the wedding invitation that installs itself on your phone.

In practice

  1. What Counts as Personal DataNames, NIC numbers, phone numbers, salaries and health notes: the information your job will put in your hands.
  2. The Data Protection Act in Plain LanguageSri Lanka’s Personal Data Protection Act takes effect for organisations on 1 January 2027. Here is what it asks of you.
  3. Handling Customer Data Day to DayMost data leaks are not hacks. They are a forwarded spreadsheet, a screenshot in a group chat, an unlocked laptop.
  4. AI Tools and Confidential DataPasting a customer’s details into a free AI tool is sharing them with a company outside your own.

Advanced

  1. Check Through Another ChannelWhen a request is urgent and involves money or codes, confirm it somewhere the scammer cannot reach.
  2. The First Hour After a MistakeYou clicked, typed a password or shared a code. What you do in the next hour matters more than the mistake.
  3. Reporting Scams in Sri LankaWho to tell, in what order, and what to keep, so that your report can actually help.
  4. Your Security RoutineFive habits, a few minutes a month, and one last real-or-scam test before your certificate.
